East 9 was engaged by the Client to convert the existing 4-storey flatted factory into a church. The site is located at the junction of Alexandra and Tiong Bahru Road Singapore.
Simple Elegance
The scope of work includes application to Urban Redevelopment Authority for zoning amendment, design enhancement of the existing facade and interior finishes upgrade.
Contrast and Movement
The facade design is a compositional interplay of lines and planes. The essence of the composition is based on the formative language from old and new materials.
When reduced to lines and planes, a new design composition filled with contrast and movement emerges.
Each part of the composition has its own existence, at times in opposition to another, thereby uniting the ultimate form of the building. The modest design is devoid of any religious representation on the facade but the beauty of its simplicity lies in the smooth white walls with big windows that curves round the corner as an iconic address to the street corner.
